Ph drop but nothing else has changed...?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am not li,king the low ph now, its gettimg to low, although the fish seem fine, could I add add some thimg to the system to bring it back up slowly, maybe crushed coral etc, not pph up etc though.
If if add something when would I need to change it, or how long would it las.

Crushed coral is a great choice. It doesn't take much. About 0.05Lbs per gallon. I put a 10 lb bag into a 200 gallon tank and it worked like a charm!

Yup, I would suggest putting it in your sump if you don't want to see it.:)

Another + for crushed coral. It does dissolve, that's how it works, so do check your pH at least once a week and be ready to add fresh stuff when needed. But it is harmless and works well, even softwater fish will breed in water buffered by it. Just don't add it all at once. Do half of what you think you'll need and watch it for a day. Gradual changes are always best. I once added a dead coral head to my first Oscar's tank when I first learned about buffering. Took the pH from 6.0 to 8.4 overnight. He wasn't very happy with me.

I have just got home and they are all know i am here and waiting for there feed, that shows they are fine i think.
Now today i was thinkin gif they are happy should i changed the PH at all, as my tapwater is just over 5, maybe closer to 5.5 so when i do the water changes the PH should stay the same?

I am going to be building a 1200g - 1500g tank (uk) next year, how long does the crushed coral last for before i need to renew it?

I will need to be carefull with altering the params to quick with the rays i have, can anyone suggest amounts to add with just say .5 rise in PH a day at the most, the tank they are in at the minute is a 145g (UK) with a 38g sump. I can find room for the coral to go in the sump.

I am going to post in the stingray sectioj to see what folk are keeping there rays in PH wise.

thanks for the help

wayne:)

Any idea how long the CC will last untill i need to renew it, not to ofetn i hope as its not cheap stuff over here, and when i get the big tank going:eek:, or do i just go off the PH level in the tank, i tend to check level every 3 days atleast so i can keep a good eye on them.

I put half a handful in my tank and I never had to add extra. I would do a little at a time like knifegill suggested so the ph doesn't fluctuate quickly. It does dissolve, but if you wash it out well it won't disolve quickly. It should buffer the water for a good while before you need to add more
