Toronto, ON.
So the 180g is filled with water and is cycling. I did a water test today and the ph was high like 8+ so I thought I put too much prime in it and did a wc then I did another test and ph came out to be 7.4. Now tonight when I did another test the ph is back up to 8+ again and I have no idea as to why. I have the emperor90gallon rated filter on it with like ceramic noodle pieces and some sponge. Other than that the whole tank is bare.

Anyone have any idea as to why PH keeps going up?

I think its just the water supply. I dont know what the heck is wrong with the water supply in Toronto. My rays have been shedding slime coat non stop ever since 2 weeks ago when they started fixing water pipes all around the city. Its becoming a big pain in the ass. I've called them multiple times but nobody ever has any info on extra additives to the water...

Well I tested the water from tap and it's 7.6 and that's the ph in my 75g most of the time but still the 75g never reaches the 8.4 mark. That is High. If I put my rtg in there I can prob kill him. I have no idea what's changing the ph. I bought a small bottle of bacteria today for the 180g so I'm not if that's what raised the ph. I dropped in 11 gold fish tonight to help the cycle and thy are doing fine right now. Maybe I'll do a wc tomorrow and see what happens. Any other ideas?

what do you have for substrate and how are you cycling your tank?

The tank is bare right with nothing in it. I'm planning to use the emperor filterto cycle water with the 11gold fish in there then add my clown loaches. Once that's done I will later introduce my rtg and move my 2 ac110 to the 180g replacing the emperor. Once the rtg is in the new tank he will prob eat up the gold fishes so in the end there will be only 5loaches and my rtg with 2 ac110's and I will add an eheim404 on the side to polishthe water.

I Had the same problem with my 500g. It's around 7.8-8 tap is 7.8. I had it running for about 2months now. I did some research since aro does well around 7.2 and i came across almond leaves. I've order it from a lady in India. I can give you more info on it if you're interested. After the 1st week i test my water and it's now at 7.4. I've never got the PH this low on my 500g. It's tans (black water) the water a bit which is good for the aro anyway. I notice my aro is more active and eats like crazy.

Seachem acid buffer works well.
No phosphates, and a little goes a long way. My real world testing 1/4 teaspoon in 180-250 gallons will drop ph 0.1-0.15 in water hardness of 4-12 dkh. Depending on your water hardness, you may need to repeat the same dose once or twice more in order to buffer the ph. NEVER add more than enough so that the ph will lower more than 0.2-0.25 in 24hour period.

I think when you cycle you tank you need to keep water changes to a minimum if at all mate.

wow 8ph for ur tank? but wouldn't my rtg and clown loaches die in ph8+ waters?? Ofcourse with gradual change in ph assuming. And not sudden change in ph like that. I mean gradually let the fish get accustomed to ph rising. At what ph would they become fatal?

Classic. Yah I shouldn't have done wc but I was afraid for the gold fishes that's in the tank cycling. The ph was really high an I have no idea why. At why ph would it become fatal for fish? Ph8.6+ ???
