Ok so ive noticed whenever i do a water change which is about a 25% every 3 days my ph will rise slightly from 6.6-7.0 as the water out the tap is a much higher ph than the tank but the next day when i test the water it has droped right down to about ph 6.0 which is way passed the regular holding of 6.6. before adding the water to the tank it is treated with prime and stability. has anyone else experienced this. pain in my ass. :nilly::cry:

There could be a few faults that can explain this.

But most importantly your Cichla should be fine. I don't know how other species in the tank (if any) will react to the up and downs in pH. But if you want it to stay around 7, try removing anything that may make the water more acidic(I.E some driftwoods, leafs, medications, i'm not sure what you have in your tank).

What are you using to test it? Are you sure it isn't inaccurate? Check.

Stability should help if the test is accurate.

Best of luck.

you need to increase the buffering capacity of your tank. The pH shouldn't shift with a water change like that. pH is a logarithmic scale so each time it increases by 1 its actually an increase of 10x. I wouldn't think that a small pH change would effect your fish but if your pH is that susceptible to just an H2O change it will leave you open for a disastrous crash.

My water is exactly the same, but drops from 7.3 out of the tap down to the middle sixes and lower within a day. I was using crushed coral but that is getting old because it's so fickle and wears out too fast because I change so much water. Now I use 1/2 a teaspoon of baking soda per 5 gallons and my water stays at 7.0-7.2 all the time.
