pH keeps droping

If the tank was cycled you would not be reading zero nitrates

Did you 'feed' the empty tank in the 1-2 wks it ran fishless with the cycled filters on to keep the filters cycled? Otherwise the good bacteria dies and you're left with an uncycled tank. I didn't see where you'd checked for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates but that'd be a good thing to do ASAP just in case that's your problem.
I'm baffled, too. But it's something and if you can get the tests done and keep throwing out ideas someone just may hit on what the problem is.

within the 1-2 weeks the tank was running, I did not add anything to keep the bacteria alive. I guess my tank is not cycled as previously stated.

At the moment, what are my options in getting the tanks cycled asap for the existing plecos? I can only think of 2 things: use the existing bacteria from an establish filter and buy live cultured bacteria in the LFS.

I am afraid of any NO3 and NO4 spike to the sensitive plecos.

Thanks guys for your help.

Transfer some of your established filter media to those tanks and keep monitoring your water parameters.

ok, thanks. I can't beleive that after so many years in keeping fish, I cannot cycle a tank:screwy:

Thanks guys....back to basic chemistry for me.

My question is, does the pH continue to drop below 6.0 or does it stabilize at 6.0?

Don't just assume the tank is cycled (or not cycled). Test the water, you've got to do that. I've left tanks sit empty for a week with cycled filters on them and they stayed cycled, other times they didn't. It's dependent on too many things. So you've GOT to test it before you know, there's no other way around it. Do you have the API test kit? That's a must have.
