Approx. 6.8 and that's usually where the tank water is too.
thats a good p.h. for ps.mine is at about 7.8 and Ive got a high k.h. so the p.h. will not move unless i Mis a water change

I actually checked again and my tap water pH is actually between 7.0 and 7.2, which is still OK.

My tank however, is still sitting at about 6.0. Even since yesterday's WC.

Good news though is that the pH level is the only "problem".

do you use a PH buffer?
im a fan of the proper6.5ph product... it holds things pretty steady...

but good to hear his behavouir has gotten back to normal... just keep up with a routine water change schedual, and you should be fine... 25-40% waterchange weekly...

my ph comes out of my well at like 5.6 and will fluxuate to about 7.5 if you let it sit for awhile, so the buffer helps keep things even when adding new water, i dont have to worry about chlorine from city water thou, so thats a bonus...

Don't use a pH buffer, don't even know what it looks like.

I will look into them though, and yes regular WCs and monitoring are like a religion to me. I've been keeping a pretty good schedule since I've had the tank and the RBP.

This is the first time I've had problems with levels being all out of whack...since the introduction of frozen Silversides into his diet. Too much of which he wouldn't eat and they're oily too.

Good lesson learned!

I'm not a big fan of chemical buffers.you shouldn't need any if your k.h. is high enough.what i would do before adding any chems is get a test kit that will read k.h. then you will know what your buffering capacity is the higher the reading the more holding power it has. mine is about 120 and p.h is 7.8 and will not move.the less chemicals the better for your red.just my opinoin...

Good point. If it was one of us we would likely try to do it without the meds. He seems happy in his 6.0 pH tank, so I'll just keep monitoring stuff and as long as he's OK then that's all I want.

Another thing I wanted to ask was.....

What would cause me to have a tap pH of 7.0 - 7.2 and have it drop to 6.0 once in the tank? What could I have in my tank that would be causing this?

i always keep my Piranhas PH at 6.5...

i use a ph buffer to hold the ph steady, it works pretty good...

the rule of thumb is a steady pH is better than a fluxuating one...
but yes, your right, any where from 5.8 to 7.2 is ok for piranhas...

so having your ph drop to 6.0 shouldnt contribute to the behavour your describing... hmmmm
i agree a steady PH is best

Hey everyone,

I haven't posted in a while...been busy.

Anyway, the Ph is still floating around 6.2 and the RBP is doing great. I actually have him (or her...not sure really) eating out of my hand now. Discovered that he LOVES frozen bloodworm cubes.

Here's a video of it:
