Ph problem for Pacu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used to have the same low pH problem when I grew my pacu up when I started fishkeeping in the early 90's.

pacu grew to 18" long and ate like a pig.

tank was only 65 gallons.

high ammonia in the tank, pH low so the ammonia was non toxic, that was the only reason the pacu lived. I sold him as I could not keep the water quality in check even with regular water changes.

there is really little your going to be able to do as a long term solution for this problem.

your fish need a pond.

a tank is not going to cut it.

if you cannot house them properly please find them a new home immediately before they die. thats what I had to do.

in the meantime big water changes and feed every other day (to help keep waste levels down - they are not going to starve) is about all you can do.

good luck

If you bothered reading beyond the first page, you'll see the advice i've given him.

Can't help myself, not the first time I've seen someone accuse others of trolling on this forum. As an actual troll (on other websites) I don't get it. :screwy:

It was his first post and 2 large fish in an incredibly small tank. It seemed like a troll to me at the time. I wasn't the only one accusing either. But, if you read as the thread progressed and he gave more info, I replied and gave him answers. Also when you quoted me, "I think its a troll too, but if it is real I want to give those pacu's a chance to live." Its obvious that I still had the intent to help them even though it was possibly fake.

No test results have been posted since the request for shaking the reagent bottles?

Hmm, it was a simple request too. Very curious.

He (they?) posted that they tried testing with a newer kit, less than a month old, which provided the same results.

Even new kits settle out. From the day the reagents are poured into the little bottles til the day they are used is how long??

I don't know either, depends on the store and their turn over rate. If its more than a month... shake it up.

Elaborate.........Pacu are one of the best fish around......if one can house one that is......Great personality, great eaters, gets along well with tank mates,Clean fish,etc,etc........they just get big is all.....

No doubt they can be great fish when well cared for, as you know. It sounds as though you're taking care of yours well. The same can't be said for most people though (and this thread is just another example, though the poster may be taking steps to change things).

The hard truth is that 99% of LFS Pacus are going to live an awful life. The economic realities just don't match up for a fish that can get as big as a car tire. For example, a LFS near me has 50 or so Pacus for sale, and no tanks over 125 gallons.

If 99% of puppies sold faced the same fate the whole country would freak out! :naughty:
