pH Problems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
5 is not impossible for amazonian fish. Main thing is no swings.....

I once distracted mysel, had a ank with discus wich had a lot of wood and one sunny day realised my ph was 3... Fish were absolutely fine.

WOW.. 3 is like swimming in a battery...

I know....fish were aboslutely thriving....loads of wood, amazon extract, food, and lazyness with wc.s..

As i often say, the less you care ( was in sucha phase ) the better fish fare. :)

Isn't that the truth!!

As said, crushed coral does the trick, but you need a lot of it, assuming it is a big tank.....

What new fish are you planning on introducing?
A very nice male jag with a female and another cichlid.

I set up a constant drip system and my ph leveled out around 7. Also in the past I used lime stone, but it works slowly.
I would like to do a drip system, but I don't have the time or energy for a project like that right now.

yeah, i also use crushed coral in my sump to maintain a stable ph level.
I put maybe 2 gallons in last night, but I'll probably get another container and put some more int.

another alternative is to change substrate to aragonite.

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)
I want to stick with my black sand. I have black and white african cichlid sand in my poly tank, but it's way too fine for this tank.

I use crushed cral with aragonite. But even so i ended up taking out all the wood and replacing it with river stones...
The wood is the main problem, but I really don't want to remove it. The problem is when I try to add fish. They fish that are in there that are used to it are fine because of where they're from, but any new fish I've tried die within a few days and it's the only thing I can figure out. The only fish I've been able to put in there lately was the Xingu. Thank God it was fine with it.

Wow 5.0 would scare me. Crushed coral might work but I would see what the ph is coming out of faucet. I would add ph 7.5. And try too work it up gradually. My dropped in my tank too 6.0 before and my bass were like black. They weren't feeling the low ph.
It comes out of the faucet around 6.5. I really don't want to use pH up chemicals.

Of cours the xingu was no problem.

I still would take a lot of wood out, for central americans...

In any case, should you proceed do a very slow acclimation to the jags,,,with a deip ssytem...am talking about 4 to 5 hours accimation....sloooowly

Might do the tick...

Got the pH up to 6. Either way, I will drip acclimate this time. I don't like to do that a lot of times because the water cools down in the bucket. As long as it stays stable, I'm good with 6. Looks like I won't be getting the fish until early next week, so I have more time to prepare. I'm going to do a water change tonight and not add any baking soda and see where I'm at in a couple days.

pH still sticking around 6+ and haven't added any baking soda for probably a week, so I'm going to try and pick up the fish today or tomorrow and then maybe I'll take some pictures and post them...been a while

After reding this last week I looked over an notices my bass were black. I checked tank and the ph was 6.0. I filled sump with crushed coral did a 60 percent w/c. Then I got a big balance block and put it on there it wa for saltwater but it won't hurt nothing. I've checked ph for a week and it staying at 7.4. So this was a 420 gallon. It worked so far. Hope this helps you get your up.

ends up that he's keeping the jags, so I won't be getting them after all, but I still really needed to get this problem fixed. Would have been a lot smarter if I would have done this months ago. Not sure if I should look elsewhere for one because I've been wanting a really nice male jag for a while, just kind of put it on the backburner for a while.

where would I find a balance block and more info on composition, etc., please

I'd be verifying your KH if you cant raise and keep PH stable. If you have a super heavy bio load you might be getting stripped of KH which thus drops your PH all the time. After adding Baking Soda over and over it will raise and hold temporarily and then drop again. I'd be adding the Baking Soda in small qty's frequently as needed and that will hold and maintain PH and KH. Definately Crushed Coral and if needed remove excess wood.
