pH spike - unknown cause - any help?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes distilled (clear) vinager is a good thing to have on hand
Especially if you dose Kalkwasser..
It will drop the PH in seconds..

Funny story
This friend of mine was showing of his new KALK reactor and was tinkering with it on his 300 gallon Mixed reef tank.
Well we walked around to the front of the tank and it was quickly going cloudy from an overdose of kalkwasser.
So we looked at his PH and it jumped to 10.3 in about 2 minutes..
So he grabbed the vinegar bottle and started putting it in the sump by the 1/2 cup..
It soon went down to 8.3 and all was well
The funny thing was we couldn't even see 2 inches into his tank it was so cloudy. LOL

Yeah, same thing happened to me - got all cloudy like that. Wasn't sure if that was directly related. And yeah, cleared up in seconds. Seems to have reached an equilibrium. The pH is still spiking a tiny bit, but whatever rock is releasing the base seems to be almost done.
