Ok I have a 10 gallon that has 5 barbs in it and every time I add a bit of water to top it off or for some other reason I get a pH spike. It can jump from around 7.0-7.2 to well above 8 sometimes. I put in water safe and pH down before I put it in the tank but nothing seems to be helping control the pH levels!!

:help2:

What are the water parameters stright from tap? i would place a piece of drift wood to lower the ph.

DON'T use the pH lower products. They don't 'soften' the water, it's just acid that alters the pH reading. You can make your fish sick with pH swings like that. Just use your own tap water, the fish will be perfectly fine and much better off.

but if the pH is reading high without any products then the fish still act odd and/or die. I have gone through two groups of fish already.

try peat moss in the filter...should naturally lower the ph over a period of 2-3 weeks at a time, then you have to replace the peat
