What fish are showing signs of stress because if it's the moray then it's because it is in fresh....
Another reason your fish are stressed is because the buffers in your water are negating the pH down so they're getting a brief low pH followed by it bouncing back up...
In short STOP useing the pH down, until you can find out why your pH is high.....
Lastly, why do you want the pH lower?

I have the same problem want to low my ph for discus. i am owning an RO water filter that using for drinking water and ice. I replace those filters very 6 months. I m thinking to cut the used filters to get the media in side and put those in my reaction filter. will that helps??

hardness 75(soft) it right in the middle

bio wheels. as in what type of filter, penguin etc ?


How are you testing your ph ?
test strips, liquid indicator or electronic probe ?
If electronic how old is , and what was the lat time you calibrated.
If liquid, how old is the test kit and what brand.
If test strips, throw them away they are useless.

I'm sorry to tell you the test strips are not a reliable or an accurate method to determine ph.
The liquid test kits are a better solution and are fairly inexpensive. Use one of the testing kits from reputable companies such as API. seachem, etc.

The penguin 70 has a very small bio wheel. although a good amount of bb can be housed there, often most owners have accidents with this filter, and either try and clean the wheel or let it dry out. I suggest add another filter such as a canister to your system where you can house more bio media with less chance of being disturbed. You should find that once your filtration system is up and running and the nitrogen cycle is doing it's thing, your ph will actually fall. I wouldn't be too concerned about the ph. I would be more concerned about your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate levels. If you don't have a test kit for these, I suggest you go out and grab one and test your your water.
