I had all 80+ tanks on a single filtration system all filtered through a pool pump with 2 sumps. One sump was setup as a trickle system and the other was just a filtered resevoir basically. As soon as I closed the breeder tanks from the system and they kept old water instead of cycling a whole tank worth of water every hour they started to breed. Once I closed them off completely and just relied on sponge filters they started to breed like crazy.

Yes I just top them off. Anywhere from 2 - 6 fish. I operate on the philosophy that since rift lakes don't turn over and the water basically stays "old" that my system would work better if the fish are in "old" water. Makes sense and it works. Also going by the idea that just because a fish isn't wild caught you don't need to replicate a natural environment is just not right.

I see this as just the opposite. I get a lot more breeding when I cahnge the water in the tanks. The temperature fluctuation and fresh water tend to spark breeding behavior.
