Is there such a thing as too low of a ph reading? My test strips only go to 6.4 and I'm using discus buffer 5.8-6.8. Is it too low?

Ya 0 :) battery acid :)

Never kept rays and read the it was better to keep the ph lower than nuetral. My ph at home is extremelly high due to hard water. Oh by the way...I also read they could copper poisoning. Can they get it if I have copper pipes?

copper ..possibly yes....
also, buffers don;t contain acids so they won;t lower your pH, they will just 'support' it at certain levels, so if you have water at pH7.5 using a 6.5 buffer won;t do anything except add minerals to your already buffered water

So then what do I do to lower the PH...or should I lower it at all? And what should I do about the "copper" thing? This is a hell of alot harder than the Pbass I usually keep...I can keep those in motor oil and they'd be fine.

IMO rays are fine at any pH (6.0-8.0) as long as it is stable and the ray has properly been acclimated to it. The water out of my tap has a pH of 7.8 and is liquid granite; as long as I keep up my water changes the water chemistry will be stable and stability is the key in ray keeping. You want to avoid swings as that will do a ray in quick!

Instead of adding a new thread to the millions we already have...I'll just add to this one. I was reading in the tips thread that you should have "non-silica" sand. Problem is I HATE my sand... I was going to change to a small gravel but was noticing all the gravel that I find locally says "epoxy coated". Is that bad? And how smooth do they have to be...they can possibly cut themselves that bad can they?

Epoxy coated gravel is spot on for use with rays. Its a smooth plastic coating :)

So then what's the "non-silica" thing?
