what is the proper ph range for keeping knife fish at

Neutral for most is a good start, but they're pretty adaptable to PH if you keep the water clean (as it should be for all fish anyway). I have very alkaline water and I've never lost a fish from it, including Discus.

That PH shouldn't be a problem.
How big is he? How does the water test? They're far more sensitive when young and small.
