Philly's Big Als Open - They Got Red African Cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The store is a work in progress. I stopped in again today and it looks like about 80 to 85% of the tanks have fish. There is another empty store (This is in a strip mall) next to Big Als that has a For Lease sign on it, but it is filled with aquarium supplies. If I think of it, I'll ask if they are planning to expand from their two strip store size to three.

Couple things in the fresh water section that caught my eye.

They have a tank full of BIG Black Lace Angels. I always wanted an Angel tank. This is the first time I have seen them full grown; very beautiful. As feared, MTS is flaring up again.

I also saw Pacu's for the first time. One of the fish forums (maybe it's this one) has a frequent poster named "Pacu Mom". After seeing them, I can see the attraction. The two they had were about 4lbs (after a certain size I measure fish by weight).

Dont know what the hrs are tomarrow, but I know they open @ 10:00,not sure on closing time.

That's ok.. just want to know how big it is/how it compares to TFP? Another words any reason for me to drive 2 hours+ for big al's?

kevin in my opinion not worth the drive prices are standard to most lfs there fish were priced ok nothing crazy there but dry goods are rediculous. 130 bucks for pinpoint ph. ill probally go there one more time to see if the large salt tanl has fish in it but after that I won't go back tfp is bigger and 100 times better

Cool thanks.. just wondered how it compared...

what is the address? Been Googling it and can't seem to locate it. Is it in Plymouth Meeting? I'm coming from Manayunk/Roxborough area.

For all you Americans, Big Al's is usually split in two sections, upfront where you walk in is the dry goods section, then you move to the back in the "fish room". I would like to know what their shark tanks look like. I hope all who go have good things to say about them.

Unckeyherb,
Just get on Germantown Pike and head towards Route 202. Northtowne Plaza is just before the 202 intersection on the left. There is a Starbucks on the corner and a Dunkin Donut directly across the street on the right.

It's much easier to find than the World Wide Aquarium in Roxborough. I made three trips down Ridge before I spotted it.
