What’s the temperament with these guys? You allude to them being semi-aggressive but that’s a wide spectrum. Can they be housed with more docile fish, or will they pick on things that don’t assert themselves?
After 3 months in the 4500g we lost our original male phoenix, which was one of the three that Wesley Wong transferred to us in 2015.
I am not entirely sure about the reason. On the surface, the gars, or likely the biggest cuban gar, bit the phoenix at least 4 times, leaving patches of scales missing. Two bites have healed up. The 3rd was healing when the 4th major bite occurred all in the same general area toward the tail. The fish hasn't recovered after the last bite and died seemingly from stress.
Probably overall cyprinids are not safe with large gar, even if they are far bigger than the gar.
