The tank is lit like most other aquariums with flourescent lights.
The light in the pictures is coming from my Nikon speedlite sitting on top of the tank sending light down in the aquarium.
The bright flash acts as a spot light when not diffused, creating the effect you're talking about.
Thank you for the compliment, so far I am extremely happy with my camera.
Next up will be a nice macro lens to take pics of my smaller fish.
