Hi all, thinking of adding Photosynthetic Bacterial into ray pond to condition water. Have any rays keepers here try this? Heard that it is quite good but I am worry about any side effect. Any comments.

Treatment of aquarium water by denitrifying photosynthetic bacteria using immobilized polyvinyl alcohol beads

During the purification of an aquarium for carp breeding, a relatively high level of chemical oxygen demand (COD) was removed by filtration systems packed with both alginate- and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-immobilized gel beads of Rhodobacter sphaeroides S. Low nitrate accumulation was observed in the alginate gel beads packed system due to denitrification, but high levels of nitrate and nitrite accumulation were observed in the PVA gel beads packed system. This phenomenon was caused by the inhibitory effect of PVA on nitrite reductase. The boric acid used for hardening gel beads of PVA slightly inhibited nitrate reductase. On the other hand, during the denitrifying growth experiments for this strain, boric acid inhibited cell growth, but PVA only partially inhibited cell growth. Based on electron equivalent (Yeq.), growth yields using various kinds of concentrations of PVA were almost identical. It was suggested that PVA might only limit the growth rate of this strain by the inhibition of nitrite reductase.

That?

so i guess this isnt bio spira type of bacteria?

It sounds like a bacteria, that when provided light, consumes nitrates.. Only works with outdoor settings and/or natural sunlight I would imagine.

Would be more applicable you know.. if more of us lived in the tropics and had outdoor ray ponds.. :irked::irked:

one day ill move somewhere and have a 50K pond outside and filled with rays....

i wonder if halide and sodium combo would duplicate this... i have been thinking of hooking up my halide hps combo in either i dual bulb hood or i have a light rail style set up that can hold 4 units and it slowly rotates to evenly cover plants with hps and halide light....

bump for maybe some further info or people woth expierence??

Yes, only effective in outdoor with sunlight. However, tot it also helps to reduce NO2 and ammo ? Going to try in my pond soon, will let u guys know about the result, but will take a couple of wk for it to wk according to the instruction.

i wonder is a MH and HPS combo could duplicate this on a indoor basis

Any updates on result of PSB?
I just bought MR AQUA PSB which claims to
rapidly breakdown toxic waste and sludges.
contain natural colloid which serve as protective barrier for fish.

But have not tried it yet.

I still do my weekly water changes.
