Any bichir really, other cichlids like Geos or sevs, silver dollars or balas for schooling fish, you have some decent options.

they grow really slow, i see most around 9". My experience with serpae tetras and tiger barbs were horrible, they would nip at everything!!! I wanted to try them out knowing their tendency to nip but it was a risk i wanted to take since they were cheap. I think cory cats would look nice in the set up. If you do add more fish just keep an eye on the serpae and tiger barbs.

Exactly! I have to put them in a species only tank just to keep them from nipping everything else. And I keep 17 of them! Still nipping even in a heavily planted tank.

If you go planted-tank-crazy like me right now, you'll have an easier tank maintenance as long as you don't have diggers and fish who are like weapons of mass destruction. Very good water quality and very natural looking. Just my two cents... but I see you have very good eye and designing skills so I raise my hopes for you!
