Picked up a 3" Endli

I bet its captive bred, and the external gills should come back after some time. I got a del at 3" with none, they regrew and didn't lose them till ~6". Fish chewing at the gills, stress, low oxygen, all possibilities why they are not present. Clean water and a healthy diet (I suggest NLS) will promote good, healthy, and fast growth. Goodluck!

Is there any difference in captive bred? I heard captive bred don't reach a decent size as to wild caught?

Should hit 18" easily and any more is just a bonus, also will be more "hardy" and less sensitive to sudden changes to its habitat
