thanks guys.

I just got them 2-3 weeks ago at the size of 2.5" each one for $7 but the price for customers was $25 I got some discount.

seems the light was the matter! I changed the light and now the tank has enough light. he shows better colors. now he only brings them out when he gets stressed out.

this tank is a 40g = 150 liter , 12*20*40" = 30*50*100 cm

the filter is an internal power filter and a bed filter ( don't know the exact name, its a 700g/h power head that sends the water into a box above the tank containing floss and ceramic rings.
I have placed the filters behind that fake plant at the left.

about the woods sorry I don't know what kind they are. I just bought them months ago, $5 each one!
right on thanks.....good luck with him....Are you gonna move him into a bigger tank when he gets bigger or are you gonna keep him in the 40 gal? The only reason I ask is cause everything I read say's the need 55 minimum

He can stay in the 40 for about a year, maybe more, maybe less. 55 reall is a BARE minimum and wont hold alot of full grown FHs. I have several that need 90 minimum, 150 better.
Keeping fish in Iran, prretty neat. Is it a popular hobby there and if so what kinds of fish are available? Keep us posted on he progress of #2, and try garlic, raw squeezed garlic mixed with raw shrimp pieces for the one that wont eat. This treatment can take up to a month, but it will work if it will eat. Shell and cut the shrimp into small pieces. Peel, crack fresh garlic and then really squeeze or pound mince the crap out of the garlic, soak the shrimp in with this for a while in the fridge. Feed it the shrimp/garlic mix daily for as long as it takes.

Thanks for the comments buddies,

I don't know the exact dimensions of standard 55gs over there ( here we use Liter and meter! ) but I think theres not much difference between the foot print of my 40g and a 55g, after all I'm agree that even a 55g is not big enough for a fullgrown FH or even for a younger FH to get to fullgrown size. but for now this tank is all I can provide for him.

I had a pair of GTs in this tank, the male was one of the best I ever seen but I lost them both for a damn internal disease that I couldn't cure. then the tank was empty for some weeks till I got this guy.

I will try to upgrade the tank when he got big but honestly I can't say it for sure. I still live with my parents and have already used all my space for a few tanks. setting up a new and bigger tank is something that I can't say for sure. its almost a year that I'm saving money and planning on getting a 100-150g for my pair of oscars but they are still in a tank much smaller than what they deserve ...

matt, about the other one, the problem is that he won't eat anything even frozen bloodworm. I have tried metronidazole, praziquantel, and a hexamita related product, but they didn't work. I have read that Fenbendazole is very effective for deworming but I couldn't find it here.

and about fish keeping in Iran, its not very popular but many people do it here and many of the common fish in the world are available here too.
I'm only a fan of american cichlids and don't know even the name of many africans, livebearers, and herbivorous fish! here is a list of some americans available here:

Very common american cichlids, get bred here in Iran and almost always available:

Oscar ( all kinds )
Angelfish ( all kinds )
Green terror
Severum ( gold, green)
Red devil
Flowerhorn ( low grade )
Rainbow cichlid
Texas cichlid
Convict
Discus ( low grade and not all kinds )
Parrot hybrids like FH/parrot , RD/parrot , convict/parrot
Jaguar cichlid ( not common )
Firemouth ( not common )
Salvini Cichlid ( rare )
Chocolate cichlid ( rare )

Not bred here, but get imported sometimes:
dyed parrots ( unfortunately they are very popular here )
Discus ( high grades )
Flowerhorns ( not best of them )
Geophagus ( it is a few months that a few kinds of them are getting available, proximus and juripary I think )
Ramirezi ( just a few kinds of rams are available )
Jack Dempsey ( very rare, not seen them for months )
Peacock Bass ( first and only time imported some months ago )

Not available and I've never seen or heard of them in stores and forums:
Pike cichlid
Apistogramma and Dwarf cichlids
dovii
Red terror
Sajica Cichlid
Mota
Vieja ( I want one! )

unfortunately the knowledge of fish keepers and fish sellers about fish keeping is very limited here. many of them don't know even the correct fish names, what size they can get, what conditions they need to live, but they buy/sell and keep them for a while till they die and get something to replace it.

many of them don't know anything about nitrogen cycle, water changes and this things. they think they should wash the tank and change the water every year! :irked:

after all, people are not the main guilty. many of them don't have access to the internet to get information, many don't know english to use the information. many don't have enough budget to spend on the hobby. and other reasons.

in the recent years some local forums are raising here and some people with better knowledge are trying to familiarize the people with the basics of correct fish keeping. its only 2 years that I have started fish keeping from the zero point while I didn't know anything about it but after some months of researching and experiencing now I know a few things to teach to my people.

at the end, sorry for the long and annoying story!

here is a link to a photo gallery of some Iranian guys if you are interested, its in Persian but you can see the pictures in the threads. not something special but you will find some neat ones also.

cheers. :)

Blu-ray,
Thanks for the detailed reply, and not in the least bit boring. Actually very educational for any who read it. I would imagine there would be some very good areas in your country to establish fish farms for commercial breeding if one had the resources.

As for your sick fish, when in doubt I always salt the crap out of the tank and wait for them to get better or die. Best of luck on that guy.

Matt
