how is the fish going to suffer?

Because it will end up dead. I CHALLENGE you to keep it for 6 months, don't trade it in and don't kill it. Get it a good size tank, feed it lots and take peoples advice on this site.

Ok how will he not suffer?? I'm going to read through the stickies.

It will not suffer if you massively increase the tank size and invest in massive filtration.

More than this, listen to what people are saying, it is free advice and given by people who care about the welfare of the fish without making any money from you getting them.

Even the most skilled fishkeepers would fail to keep a Ray healty in a 55 gal tank with small filters (If you are not using multiple cannisters or a large sump then they are too small)

I dont see how your ray doesnt suffer in any possible way in your setup...You clearly have a bioload too big for your filters. Your fish are completely unsuitable for such a small tank. You obviously do not know what you are doing. However many times we tell you your 55 gallons is too small, you clearly have no intent on upgrading it...What is the point in reading stickies then? You clearly have no intention of following them either nor the advice given...

Seriously cichla dude, your the reason that LFS employees look at kids like we're idiots.
yep.

I'm 13, but have been looking into getting a pair of arapaimas. however, i would never buy them on an impulse. i have been researching their dietary, salinity, warer parameter, and housing requirements for almost a full year. and i'm smart enough to know that they can't be kept in a tank 15'x7' or so for very long. john's outgrew his 1800 gallon, and then the 5000 gallon, in less than 2 years. i'm going to have them in a tank with a footprint of 30'x15', and even this will not house them for their entire lives. (by the time they get 6-7', i'll be 20, and will get my own place, and build a pond at least double the size. all for the welfare of the fish. they are living creatures, not toys. how would you like it if you were stuffed in a room 8'x2', and it was crowded to boot? not very much, i would imagine.

Look into the stickies in this forum about breaking them into new foods. It will tell you what is suitable for stingray consumptions.
