Agree'd.. the cons I used to have were ok parents until the fry were about .25" then they just let them go. I know my fish aren't going to bother a fry that isn't even free swimming yet.
i have free swimmers right now (maybe 1mm), the parents are carefully keeping them corralled under a rock, and aggressively fighting off any fish (even my RD) that shows any interest or curiosity. I'm confident, though, that in the end they will all end up O, JD, and RD food.
if any do survive, they deserve a place in one of my tanks for the rest of its life.
funny thing.. I was at my LFS the other day and they had a pair of severums (6" & 5") for $15 a fish and in the same tank they had "large convict" for $30 lol!
dude tell me about! at the shop i work at juvi rotkiel sevs and juvi cons are priced the same
And once you have 30 cons in a tank 4 of them will make hundreds more, we always have like 6 tanks chock full of con's lol
Key word is 'fry'....You guys are correct, they do not protect their fry to adulthood...lmao Just when they are fry. I am pretty sure I have bred cons in tons of situations, with hundreds of different mates.
True that...That is where the confusion came in. .25" and they start to get a mind of their own in a mixed tank. If you have a big tank with all cons, they stay together forever....And the "clan" gets larger (in number) and more aggressive. I have literally seen a 20 on 20 convict power strugle...Maybe the most fascinating thing I have seen in a tank. Good luck with the pair.
