Picking up a MIDAS tomorrow!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks everyone! So, he's been in the tank for 3 days now and it didn't take him long to start remodeling. As you can see from the pics above, all that was in the tank was the ornament piece at the center... I figure having that there kind of gives him this guide to swim back and forth in laps. He seems to like the back half bare so he shifted most of it to the front. Also, when people use to comment how midas' are like puppies.... wow; I'm experiencing it first had. When my 3 year old runs through the room he seems to bolt across the tank like he want's to chase her. I'm not sure if he just want to bite people's hands off or if he's just saying "Hi"... but he does a good job of being the room's watch dog.

I did notice one thing though and if someone or a few people can chime in to help provide some advice it would be helpful.

At the moment, he seems more concerned with entertaining/chasing/biting people who come close to the tank. However he doesn't seem to be much of a pig like some of my other cichlids. I usually feed either hikari but I have a few treats like shrimp and stuff. When I place a few of the floating pellets in there, he ignores them. I tried sinking pellets and he ignores those as well. I tried a night crawler and he eventually ate those but 2 of the 3 he ate when nobody was in the room.

He's definitely does not seemed stressed so I was wondering if this was somewhat normal behavior for a 12 -14 inch Midas? I'm going to let him fast for a day or so and then I'll try again buy I was wondering if someone else can provide some additional feedback.

Thanks in advance.

Beautiful fish...love the markings. Nice pickup.

You haven't had him very long. He's probably still getting adjusted to his new tank. Fish can go a long time without eating. Give him a few days, and then try again. I wouldn't get concerned unless he hasn't eaten in 3-4 weeks. He's a cichlid.....Sometimes, they just decide to go on a hunger strike to let you know who's boss haha.

Congrats on the awesome new pet. He looks great. I like his racoon mask over his eyes. He's a super nice Midas.

My question is.....Why would anyone get rid of him? I just don't understand. If I took 2 years to grow him out to the awesome specimen he is now, no way would I be selling him.

Thanks! I know?! I can't understand why they would wanted to get rid of him either? I asked the guys wife and she said it had something to do with not having enough time to take care of him.

I think I got him for a really good deal too! I checked some prices online and it might actually be average. Nonetheless, I'm glad I was able to move forward with the purchase.

Question though... how much would you say he is worth?

My take on fish prices:
Fish are cheap. Think of how much an entire set up costs. Last time I put together a 75 gallon setup, it cost me $500 (this is including every lsat nail for the diy stand, paint, air hose, etc, etc, etc...).
A heater is $30-40, and costs almost as much or more than your fish if that puts the price of your fish into perspective.
And the fish is what you really want to look at in the tank anyway. Find deals elsewhere (like heaters :) ).
If you find a fish you like and that you can properly take care of.....Buy it. It doesn't matter how much it cost. It's a drop in the bucket compared to the other costs involved in fish keeping. If you buy a $300 tigrinus, you'll spend more than the cost of the fish on food over its lifetime. The cost of the fish is just miniscule in the long run.

So whatever you paid for it.....if it's THE fish that you want.....It was worth it.

Oh yeah! Believe me, I own a couple of high quality flowerhorns that I paid a pretty penny for so I'm in TOTAL agreement with your take on fish. :)

Yeah man, if I was looking for a creamsicle midas, and I found that one, I'd have jumped on it if it was anywhere under $75. And $75 is WAY overpriced for a Midas. But if it's the one you want, what's the difference in paying $20-30 extra. So I say you got a great deal no matter what you paid because you have one awesome fish in your tank!

Some people may disagree with that, but its seriously just a drop in the bucket as far as fish keeping is concerned. Just think about what a salt water fish keeper spends on his livestock.

I just personally found my holy grail fish, and I jumped on it.....Even though it was massively outside what I wanted to spend (I was looking for juveniles at a much cheaper price, but found a ridiculously awesome adult). But I plan to keep him for the rest of his lifespan (probably another 10 years or more.....knock on wood). So what's an extra $100 in the long run?

And you're right about flowerhorns. They get real expensive real quick.

very nice midas, i've got myself a creamsicle midas which was imported from cichlids of america still small at around 5" can't wait till he puts on some size, awesome fish.
