hey...i'm picking up a new silver aro tonight...this is my first time with large fish since i have mostly had were community tanks...

anyway i'm getting a silver about 6" in length...the tank (for now a 55g) has 5 small tiger barbs (1") (which i used to help with cycling the tank) and a 4" pleco....is it okay to put the aro in there with the barbs...or should i take out the barbs and place them in a smaller tank....

or better yet let the aro eat them when he's bigger :WHOA:

and in regards to a future home for the aro...i'm just finishing up the garage and turning it into another room...and then i will be placing at least a 200g in there for the aro.

thanks guys...

200 gallon wont be enough you need at least 210 or 250 would be perfect. I prefer plexiglass lasts way longer than glass. Dont worry about scratches you can get rid of them with special compounds.

dont kid yourself. plenty of people have glass and had glass way longer than people with acrylic. glass has been used way longer.

ideally you would want a tank 3x the adult size of your fish. silvers get about 3-4', more likely 3' in home aquaria. 24" bare min for depth, but bigger is way better since silvers need room to turn.

as for barbs, if you leave them in there, they will be fish food. its up to you on what you want to do with the lives of the barbs

200g is too small but a 210g is good:confused: Makes alot of sense.:screwy:

The 55g is only gonna last you about 6 months, then you'll need bigger. Within about 18 months that aro will be 24" long and needing a tank with at least the dimension of 6' long and 24" wide, which would last the aro for a couple years after. Once your aro is nearing 30" in length you need to move to a tank that is 8' long and at least 30" wide.

They grow very quick, so be prepared. The tiger barbs will be fine as long as they don't nip the aros fins.
