Keeps nitrates under 150ppm?
What exactly do you not like about Fluvals?
Isn't the Emperor rated for 80 gallons?

No not nitrates, I'm talking total dissolved solids, TDS... the total TDS is under 150 PPM in all my tanks all the time. If it gets over that, I change my water.... Unless it's my discus tank, and they get a large water change 1-2 times per week regardless of the TDS.

I think the filter is 90 gal rated, could be wrong, but either way... it's rated at more than the tank and the Mag 250 is just icing on the cake.

The fluvals always seemed to go through more seals and need more maitenance for me, they just weren't as "user friendly" as I like and I had to replace 3 of them in the amount of time I had 1 of the Magnum 350 Canistar filters (not the H.O.T variety).

I didn't feed the discus at all yesterday, this morning they ate an entire Wattley's cube!! WOOT!

I have had Fluvals for about ten years. I have had to replace a couple impellers. I don't think any of mine are not usable, one had a problem with the impeller not running right at all, but it is fine now that I replaced all the impeller housing parts. That is out of about 11 Fluvals of various sizes and lines. The thing I don't like about Magnums is that the media is more limited. That and there is not quite as much space for media in a Magnum as in a Fluval 405. I don't know how many you have had and used, but I would suggest that if you are on the market for another canister, give Fluval another shot, or at least something besides Magnum. Most reviews are pretty positive on Fluvals, Renas, and Eheims.

Are you running an RO system? Most municipal water sources of a TDS of 300ppm or more. 150ppm TDS is very low, and pretty hard to maintain. Even my planted tank cannot maintain that for more than a week.

Yes, R/O water... out of the tap at 6.8 PH.. and about 250 ppm TDS.. After my R/O I get it down to 8.

My tank usually runs about 100-125.. 85 after a water change.

They are doing well.. all but one. The rest have adapted and are voraciously on the cubes now. But I have one Red Turq that is just running the tank wall and ignoring the goings on around her/him.

Not horribly thin ATM but you know it doesn't take long.

Oh and I'm on a well in a natural river valley. Very close to the river, so I'm sure the ground water is ... riverized. (Yes that is a techincal term)
