how would an UGF make the water worse? dont under estimate the UGF. it can do great things for a tank with substrate. think about all the water being forced through your substrate that's filled with beneficial bacteria......there's an article on Tropical Fish.

black or dark natural gravel or substrate. some big drift woods/rocks with some sword plants

Just wondering because I'd like to set-up a tank with identical stocking theme, but instead of having two endli's, have to african aro's.

Dude Y the UGF ??? It would only make ur water worse.. Get black sand, pebbles, small pieces of driftwood....as for plants Java moss, Java Fern, Amazon Swords, and a bunch of other plants..
