What happened exactly? Did the heater actually crack/break or just malfunction and get stuck in the ON position?

What brand was it?

No there's no crack that i can see in the heater it was a fluval heater. But the heater dosn't work and my fish were dead so thats what i can only asume ! it was the heater.

i'm not too clued up on african cichlids so i wasn't too sure what these were.

IMO, these cichlids are not africans, but I can be wrong. They look like red bay snooks, Petenia splendida, to me... A Central American species. BTW, Nice pics, Dan. Thanks for sharing.

Those are Tilapia, Mozambique mouthbrooders.
Snook have larger mouths.
