Since when you have 14inch long ID shark? hope it wasnt in 38gal...i dont believe your story as i have hard time to believe you. But good ole' goldfish do favor for you.

Its possible that the poor water quality killed ID shark.

it was one of my fathers work buddies tank(he gave me the aquarium with the shark already in the 29 long) and it wasnt poor water quality that killed because his eye was popped and was swimming upside dowh with blood squirting out of his eye
