The OP is my husband.
We've never had FL gar, but these guys are VERY docile and don't bother anyone. Nor do they spook easily. Very curious and outgoing. Our original one likes to swim around and sit with/on the catfish and lets the gudgeon sit on him.
The other two are starting to do the same already. They're quite social with each other and others.
The one in the 2nd pic is our original. I have some pics in the media lounge in the native fish section of him when we first got him and now (though unfortunately the glass is dirty in the latter pics). He started out brown with small spots, now he's got large spots and a silver background.
