Pictures - Istlanum and Beani

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice fish ewok! I can't help but comment on how different the beani is from the istlanum, in both body shape and markings. I can't help but think that these two fish, along with the grammodes, will all get different genus names when all is said and done. I have grammodes and istlanum and they are completely different fish. Some recent papers back up my comments.

thanks for all the complements.

yes the istlanum is a little stunner for sure. i feel sorry for the fool who traded him to me :D hahahaha

i got a few different istlanum from different sources - one group buy was done i think back in late august / early september from 'cichlid broker' if memory serves me right and that is where this guy came from. i got three from that order and i had this one male that was friggin huge! he would have been an inch bigger than this guy by this time. i kid you not. but like stupid things go, he jumped out when i, the dummy, forgot to put his lid back on.... :( one got eaten when i was on a two week business trip, and i have a surviving female living in a divided tank with my smaller beani. once i get more space i'm going to do another community set up and hopefully those two pair up naturally...

i got two more from conkel last week and they are in my 100. they already paired up at around 2.75" and are chasing everything around. they aren't really scared of the 5" regani i got as well. i dunno what size they breed, but they were lip locking and what not last night. i doubt anything will happen until another inch or more, so i'll see what happens.

i am feeding my istlanum the following - hikari excel, frozen brine shrimp and some krill on occasion. i'm getting hikari biogold tomorrow from my Big Al order, so they'll be getting that as well.

this particular beani eats pretty much anything - hikari excel, sinking gold, NLS, krill, ocean nutrition formula one pellets, flakes etc. etc. very very avid eater. my other beani seem mostly addicted to excel, brine shrimp and krill.

all fish are kept at around 78F, Total dissolved solids >500ppm (straight tap basically - i live on top of liquid rock apparently!). i give them a 25% water change every 3-4 days. i do massive changes during summer (i was doing 33% everyday during summer for a couple weeks - then i got lazy and busy). in winter ewok gets lazy mostly because of the cold (plus tap water comes out freezing! so you need to be careful not to shock the fish too much)... :D

darth - i'm not a scientist, so can't comment on how fish will get categorized, but i believe beani are 'ex-cichlasoma'... i thought istlanum were 'nanddopsis' and i believe grammodes are 'cichlasoma'... i dunno, someone other than me is going to do the categorizing :)

Very nice Istlanum, I have a bunch that I'm growing out myself. Where did you get that guy?

nice fish man :)
this particular fish came from 'cichlid broker' on aquabid.

i have two more from conkel. supposed to be a 'gold' variant.

cichlid broker supposedly supplies conkel, i dunno... i'll order from conkel again cuz his fish are good quality and you pay cheap prices!
