Hello,

i would like to know if anyone actually git pictures of truly gigantic congicus, since i rarely see really big polypterus at all.
They are supposed to reach 40" which is really a lot of fish, but this seems to be really rare.

Especialy if you compre them to the other two freshwater predators of comparable size and form: H. Aimara and Channa Micropeltes. (Of course both of those are heavier in built anyway) Record sized aimara nd micro are rare as well, but there are many pictures to prove they do indeed reach sizes of 40" and more.

Also how heavy was the heaviest congicus ever measured? I would guess around 8kg?

Or are those sizes just a myth or none fish left that are old enough to reach them, sinze is guess polypterus are growong much much slower than any channa or hoplias.

Greetings

Plenty of pics in older threads... i dont think you'll find many 40 inchers though. I think most of that data is either exaggerated and/or taken from wild specimens. Not saything they dont exist in aquaria but probably rare

Theres actually an older thread that addresses this question in depth

Anything large prolly end up in Asia somewhere. Maybe just in my head. It think the demand for monsters are there than the US. Plus all the overfishing and fish trade might have reduced some of the linkers out there.

I think most polys that grow 30"+ are caught in the wild at that size already before being in the aquarium, we rarely see a specimen grow that big from juvie in the aquarium.

I remember that thread. I recalled there being 40" congicus and 38" Ansorgii pictures in that thread. I'll try and go find it and bump it

I went trough the pic threat, but the biggest ones there, even from japanese tanks, where about 27". One pic of a 30+" specimen in the wild, but i doubt they really measured it, definetly did not look like 40" though.

The most impressive one to me was this one at around 22" because it's so thick.
