pictus catfish and kribensis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say that a female krib may be at risk from larger pictus but on the other hand a pair of kribs get very nippy. My male is attacking everything short of my midas when the other fish get within 8" of their cave.

I probably wouldn't mix kribs with predatory catfish, too much of a risk either way.

ok, well i am not having the pictus catfish now, because my tanks are not big enough. ( i have a 25g and a 20g) so the next question is, can i keep a pair of kribs, with a pair of blue rams, and if so, what else can i put in there? (this is for the 20g, the 25g is stocked nicely with a bristlenose plec, 4 cory's, 4 mollies, 4 dwarf gourami and 5 cherry barbs)

you can have either a pair of rams OR a pair of kribs but not both. kribs are african riverine species and rams are south american so they require diff setups. id go for the kribs personally since there easier to sex. but if your trying to look for profit then go for rams.

ok, setup has now changed again. am getting 4 juvenile convict cichlids on monday. thinking about keeping them with a couple of green tiger barbs, and maybe 2 kuhli loches or clown loaches

I thought that since they are rivertine and not from the rift lakes is the reason people are able to keep kribs and jewels with ca/sa cichlids. I kept kribs with my geos and they made it about 5 years which I've heard is typical for them and where as colorful as any I have ever seen in person or in pictures.

if you set up is convicts with tiger barbs my opinion is the barbs would die..convicts are pretty mean..

good point. whats the size of this tank? if its bigger then 20 gallons then i wouldnt see why you wouldnt beable to add a few danios since they like the top part of the tank but tigerbarbs would get killed.

Kribs are pretty mean when they are breeding an would likely destroy a pair of rams. Rams do require softer water but kribs are quite adaptable, as long as extremes are avoided rams can be adaptable also. Problems with water chemistry are usually with wild specimens, tank bred fish are usually more tolerant of a slightly higher ph. Aggression would be the main issue.

4 convicts will be a warzone in 20g of water. Asking for trouble in both a 20 high or 20 long. The tiger barbs probably won't last long because I know that cons seem to kill for fun, at least my 4 females did.

Khuli loaches will not last with cons, they really need to be with much gentler fish because they are quite delicate and prefer sand as they like to burrow. Once the cons realise they are there they will hunt them relentlessly.
Clown loaches really prefer larger groups of 4+ and they get big, around 16" I think. This does take years to get big but it is worth knowing so you can prepare for their potential.

yeah, am gonna have the 4 convicts for now as they are only currently 1.5cm long. as soon as they start to show signs of breeding behaviour, i will remove 2 and leave the breeding pair, and just have them in the tank. i have asked a number of times now, how long will it take for them to grow big enough to breed?
