Pictus catfish and S. eupterus together

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So I have not said much that would be new to you :) All reports more or less bear some truth and, hence, picture eupterus as a gamble, most likely to present mild compatibility problems, least likely to be problem-free, and somewhat likely to cause serious problems.

Asian syno? or USD catfish Mystus leucophasus? There are no Asian synos per se. They are all from Africa.

Young eupterus has stripes and does not look like an adult.

Synos, eupterus in particular, can live 25-30+ years proven in captivity so prepare for the long haul :) http://www.planetcatfish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=30928&hilit=lifespan

Wrong continent. It's synodontis nigriventris... No idea why I thought it was from asia. excuse the brain fart I've been reading too much lol

Yup, do know about their ability to live 20 to 30 years (and look forward to it).

So should I forgo bottom feeders and let him have the run of the mill? Or give pictus a gamble?

It really is a hit and miss thing. Unfortunately for me my s. Eupertus did not get along with my Pimelodus blochii's. They were all around the 7-8" mark and fought constantly. Pictus stays a little smaller and I couldn't imagine what the s. Eupertus would do to them. You're probably better off sticking to a group of pictus if you want active cats.

In my eyes, it depends on your taste and preferences. I personally do not see any "technical" objections. Happy pictus would make any tank look and feel wonderful. A lone syno with lots of hiding places may sound like a "too little action" kind of a tank but you do have your large dithers too...

I'd try it but, again, it's me.
