Just want to know if a pimelodella pictus or four line pimelodella would be alright in a 75 g w/ south american cichlids such as: Severum, Jack Dempsey, Texas, Nicaraguense, and Salvini. If I do get one, sohuld the catfish be as big or bigger than the cichlids in the tank already (all are between 2-4 inches).

Thanks, I figured they wouldn't bother the catfish because they don't bother the pleco, but I just wanted to make sure. Do you know about how big they get though (pictus)? Will one be alright in a 75g?

They can get up to 8 inches but usually will stay around 5 to 6 inches. Also that 75 will be very overstocked upon adulthood. To keep all those fish in the same tank your looking at a tank around 150 to 170 gallons. You should get the cats a little bigger than the cichlids, but only get them if you are splitting your fish up into different tanks or getting a much larger tank. Your tank isn't south american either. LOL It's mostly CA/ the Nic, Sal, JD. Sev is SA. Texas is NA. Also pictus cats like to be set in groups when younger up until about 6 inches.

personal i can get a group as my one is going in a 120 but when they get 6inch they dont like to be in groups and he'll be fine singaly. iam only going to have 1 and u should. goodluck with the tank it will look great when the hit adult

Mine is in with a Nic, sevs, JD, con and midas. Does just fine, nobody bothers it.

thanks, I got the four line, and its about 5 inches long, he was really active when i got him, but now he chilled out.

Yeah I don't intend on keeping the texas forever either. I want to grow it up until it gets to its larger even more aggressive stage and I will probably sell it back to the LFS, because he is already terrorizing the nicaraguense and salvini and those are two of my favorites.

I am really glad you guys are so knowledgable and could help me this much, btw I thought it was funny that the pictus catfish at petsmart said a minimum tank size was 5 gallons.

sure there pretty fast as long as the tank is a good size i wouldn't try it in smaller then a 55 but watch out some of those might get big enough to eat the pictus

I've kept pictus cats in with slightly larger cichlids without any problems. But at the size of your cichlids there shouldn't be any problems finding pictus cats the same size which would be safer to put in the tank. I have a 75 with a green terror, snakeskin flowerhorn, a nic, gramodes, bifasiatum-fenestratum cross, and a dovii all about four and five inches and they didn't bother the pictus cats.
