I have a 56 Tall tank that houses one angelfish, 3 yoyo loaches, some bristlenose plecos and a bunch of livebearers, and 4 peacock gudgeons, 4 oto cats.

I'm getting rid of all the livebearers, and putting the plecos into my goldfish tank. If I need to, I will move the gudgeons to a planted ten gallon tank I have, and the otos can be moved too.

Here is my question, can a tank that's 18"W-36"L-22"H house a small school of pictus cats?
I believe there are different species of pictus cats, right?
How do I ensure I get the right species?
Will they eat my gudgeons/otos (so I know if I have to move them or not?)

I will be moving in November, so I won't have them for long. Are they easy to rehome?

If anything, I just won't get anything to add to the tank, and leave it mostly empty. It's a planted tank and looks nice even without a lot of fish.

Oh, and....do they tear up planted tanks?

I thought that's what you meant, so why would moving mean you won't have the fish for very long.

They would be able to live in that tank for quite a while, but it may not work as a permanent arrangement (sometimes pictus cats reach 8"+, other times they don't get much past 5"... if yours turn out to be on the smaller end of the spectrum, then you'll be fine, but otherwise they'll need an upgrade).

We are moving across country, not just across the street (or even across town.)

The way the military moves you, they take your bulk household goods, then you leave, and it could be 3+ weeks before they deliver our things back to us. I'll be setting up my tanks when I get there, but I'll have to start all over when it comes to stock. *very sad for me, since I love all my fish*

I love pictus cats, i have 2 of them with my african cichlids and have never had any compatability issues and as they are hardy little buggers theycan cope with a wide range of water params.

Pimelodus pictus will only grow to 5", they look like sharks with long whiskers. another thing i thought id mention is that Pictus cats have very sharp spines so be carefull when netting as i hear its quite painfull.

I do love these fish, but larger catfish are hard to rehome around here, and finding a GOOD home for a school of them would be even more difficult.

I'll continue my quest for a super cool resident. Thanks for the input guys!

Odd considering I've personally seen them quite a bit larger than that...

I guess its possible in the right conditions and ofcourse, in the wild. In aqauriums ive never seen them get bigger than 5", maybe just over that but it wouldnt surprise me if they could get to 7 or even 8", Pictus cats are always hungry and will eat just about anything.

cheers-
