what am i doing wrong I have a 4year old pictus (well 4) that have been kept in a 4x2x2 and are only 5inches max (the runt is only 3inches:grinno: )

You're not doing anything wrong. These are "true" pictus catfish, which average about 6", and max out at around 10". But, I have seen, and heard of other catfish sold as pictus from time to time.

I'm not trying to argue, just clarifying my earlier statement.

ok. a pictus catfish gets about 6" There are many look alikes but a true pictus only gets like 6" You can easily have 3 in a 125. You could put 3 in a 55 if u wanted to.

kool i just got my tank and my friend lied to me, it is an acrylic 55 gallon so i think im in the clear

I am a pictus junkie. I own 4 spotted pictus and 2 fourline pictus cats in a 55gl and they are fine. Two of the spotted pictus my sister has had over a year and I took them in they are about 4" My 2 spotted pictus are about the same. They are pretty small and have had them since Oct 2006

My fourline pictus on the other hand are cows. I got tank boss a month after one of my spotted pictus. I got tank boss because she looked "different" and I had no idea she was a fourline pictus. She was more gold in color and her whiskers were darker. I bought Pranzer the second four line pictus cat in December and that is when I was told they are a four-line and get bigger.

Here it is April and I can tell you that my little four lines that were about 3 inches are now 5 inches with out tails included.

I plan to put the fourlines, clown loaches and the pleco in a 75gl, leave the 55gl for the spotted pictus, and eventually leave the four lines in the 75gl and move the clown loaches and pleco into a 125gl.

I adore my fourlines and they are much more peaceful in my tank compared to the spotted pictus. They fight a lot were as my four lines never fight. My sisters spotted pictus when added created a 4 spotted pictus fighting ring in my 55gl as they figured out spots.

My sisters 2 spotted pictus eventually figured out that my spotted pictus claimed the logs in the tank so they went to the wrecked ship where my largest four line pictus called home. He could care less and they both hang out in there with him. IN fact the smallest spotted pictus floats right up next to my four line pictus like he is cuddling with him and he doesnt mind a bit.

The big issue I have learned with these fish is they are active and freak other fish out. They need a lot of room on the bottom to race back and forth and swim. My 55gl is great for the spotted pictus but the four lines are getting to big at 5in and need more room.

Hope this helps from someone who owns both types!

well pimelodus pictus won't get bigger than 6'' and is probably waht you bought but there are a few fish sold as pictus also there is ornate which will get to about 8-10'' four line which get 12''and spotted pim which gets 12''
but simply post a pic and we will tell you for sure

This is my smallest spotted pictus back closer to when I got it 7mo ago or so. They are all around 4inches.

This is a video of a spotted pictus kicking a fourline pictus out of a hiding spot. You are able to see the diff. between the two and the stripes on the fourline.

I dont have good pictures because well they are night owls and It is rare I get to enjoy them out LOL
