my pictus is great he is solo in a 75g gallon grow out tank with my cichlids he gets bossy with my to clown loaches but apart from that hes awsome to watch very aggresive eater

I kept one solo in a 55g for roughly 6 months before I lost the whole tank. He was the star of the tank for sure. Very active swimmers. I would recommend keeping it in a group of at least 4-5 though for that size tank.

I'll second what most others here have said.

Active swimmers, and pushy dried food eaters. They'll chomp down any sinking pellets, worms, flakes, etc...until their bellies turn spherical. Fun to watch, they add a lot of movement and mid-water to bottom activity to any tank.

At night, some of them will kick into slow-cruising, predator mode and pick off smaller shoalers
or anything bite-sized who DARES to sleep or is not paying attention.

I love these fish! Beautiful, active and relatively easy to keep. Not at all picky about what you feed them . Peaceful, but will eat smaller fish if given the opportunity. I find that when the are younger they prefer to be in small groups like many others have stated. Very fun watching them swim around all over the place. When they get older, the seem to do fine alone. I've had mine for about 4 years and they no longer seem to enjoy each others company, and don't really bother with each other. They aren't agressive , just rather not be bothered. As for tank size, I would say 55 and above would be best as they get pretty big and are very active. As for tank mates, anything that they can't eat, they won't bother.
