How do I know if my discus or my future acquisitions have pigeon blood in them? From what I read of pigeon blood discus is that they "pepper" in a tank with dark substrate or dark backgrounds. Supposedly this "peppering trait" is exclusive to pigeon blood discus. I have a tank with black sand and a black back. I don't find the peppering appealing so I want to do the best I can to keep pigeons out of my tank.

Thanks in advance

Peppering itself is exclusive to pigeons but a golden based fish will also get a dusty look to its face in dark substrate. Most other fish will darken also but will not pepper. Only fish that will not darken at all is albinos. But I like wilds in a dark tank; seems to bring out stronger deeper colors in them imo.

Many many variations of the man-made discus we have today have started from a man made pigeon blood, and many of those man made strains will have some peppering. If you want to stay away from peppering stay away from pigeon strained discus................

you are correct but the higher the quality of discus the less peppering there will be, usually.

I was planning on getting my discus either from Discus Hans or Tony Tan via angelfishusa. Both of which are world renowned discus breeders so quality should be top notch. Its this "usually" that scares me. I'm more leaning towards the Tony Tan lines of probably red melons and yellow tang discus. Will these pepper?

Both red melons and the yellow tangs are pigeon based fish.
