Is that blood on it's face?????? It looks tore up in the pic. You say about 5 inches, and other then the damage to the face looks just like mine, which I am assuming a Johanna. But there are soooo many variations of Johanna...............(red, rainbow, gray....) I can't personally tell, except no ocelli, good sign of a johanna.
i wish i hadnt put plants in the tank, the little bugger hardly comes out now lol Also would polypterus be safe with this guy? he was in a tank full of hujetas at the lfs and hadnt killed or beaten on them.
Get more plants, driftwood, and rocks in the tank. The more comfortable it feels the more your gonna see it. Also, put in some more cichlids/fish to help drawn it out, make it feel more comfy. Firemouths make great dither fish, not to aggressive and always out in the open, which makes the pike feel more comfy. With size comes boldness......the larger your pike gets the more you'll see it. Plus it has to get used to you, have no fear it will show itself more.
Polypterus are great tank mates for pikes, as long as they aren't to small to be eaten or to large to eat the pike...
Also try some white (doesn't float) PVC in differant diameters x your Pike's length, with rocks on top - hanging out over the end... Some people don't like the 'pipe look' but most Pikes love them! We've also cut 6" & 8" dia. length-wise to make caves.... Clay/masonry in 12" sections work great for "territory". Male Pikes seem to hang out in their 'caves' more than the females - - - depends on the fish.
