After the recent death of my beloved 1 yr old fahaka due to a feeding strike he just never recovered from I find myself with an empty 120 gallon. Frankly, I was too attached to my buddy Ratchet and I just can't see me getting another fahaka anytime soon, looking at pics of other fahakas makes me want to cry. So, I've been looking around and the pikes have caught my eye.
My questions is how is their personality in general. I'd like something on the hardy side, my pH is around 6.8 so no hard water issues. But, more importantly I'm after a fish that will "bond" with its owner. In other words if I come up to the tank I'd rather it not dart into hiding. I'd prefer for it to come meet me at the glass. IDK maybe i'm spoiled by the puffers but are there any of you out there with pikes who behave like this. Can you hand feed them or would you even want to? Which species if any are the most personable or is it a matter of personal opinion. I'm not very interested in the dwarf species and I would probably only want to keep one crenicichla rather than multiple specimens.
Ratchet was my only large fish and he was my baby, so the pike will end up getting spoiled and would most definitely be the star of the tank, but it would be nice to have more than one fish. (The only complaint I'll ever have about fahakas) Is there anything that they would get along with well. I see others have used geophagus which are interesting fish, but what else would you all suggest?
Thanks,
Kim
P.S. I understand that any new fish is going to take a while to settle in. These questions are obviously meant for after the fish has acclimated to its new environment.
