Got home today and was dismayed to find my green terror had a damaged eye! I thought at first it was cloudy eye, but then I saw my sveni realy attack him... the GT was larger than the pike when I put them together, but now the sveni is larger and is just becoming aggressive... as you can see:

Here's the GT, closer view... you can see the eye but not that clearly.

I've just moved the GT to an iso tank until I figure out what to do. It's just the two of them in the 75g, plus a bichir and some dithers. I was hoping they'd get along... I guess not :(

what do you guys think? Any chance of them getting along? suggestions more than welcome!

Powerfeed the GT in the iso tank and cut down on feedings in the main tank. Hopefully the GT will put on a little more size and heal up quickly. Add some more line of sight breaks (tall plants, driftwood ect.). Try again. Get a divider if need be just to get them used to each other.

not necessarily a size issue, its just GT's aren't always tough enough to live with aggressive cichlids so giving him a size advantage should help the guy out. I'm sure once they both get to a certain point they'll be pretty evenly matched.

I know PP has had a lot of expirience mixing aggressive fish with other fish, so he'll chime in sometime with his tid bit of info....unless he is off rescuing fish that just want to cross a darn road.

GTs are great dithers for pikes...... Yeah I think your gonna hafta seperate them for a few tillthe GT gets bigger....

ok thanks guys... the darn pike grew so fast lol.

I was thinking, would a 3rd cichlid help balance things out, or potentially make it worse? I originally liked the pike + GT setup cause I thought (hoped) they'd pretty much ignore each other, each have his own space, etc., and I don't like overstocked tanks. But if a 3rd would help, I might give it a shot. Or maybe like a pair of Firemouths or something, idk. I had a Sev in there too originally, but the GT kept harassing him so I took him out.

Adding multiple is one way to disperse aggro, but then you need to stay on top of husbandry. ( more filtration and frequent WC )
I personally have never had an aggro issue between my pikes and other cichlids. ( unless they are small enough to be eaten ) but I do maintain overstocked tanks.

Yea everyone's pikes on here look so docile and mild-mannered!! It must be that mine just outgrew the GT, so assuming the GT's eye is ok (Wasn't able to check on him this morning), I'm going to try and bulk him up and re-introduce him.

Further question for the pikemasters.. assuming the GT doesn't work out (he's in a 38g grow-out now but his eye isnt looking too good.. hope he makes it), what is a good largish cichlid / other fish that would work well with my pike? JD? Texas? Would a Festae be too aggressive for the pike?

What I really want is a 6-10" cichlid to live happily with the pike, bichir and some dithers -- basically I want them to ignore each other, or if this is not possible, then to at least get along reasonably well.

just get rid of the GT and get another sveni
ive never had a great interest in GT's anyhow ;)
