I normally add about 1.5 tablespoons for every five gallons of my aquarium water. Its the Walmart type of salt that looks like its in the milk cartons. Yup, cheap and very effective! BOOYA!!

Do you guys get the WalMart salt in the pets section? Or is this salt found in the foods or some other part of WalMart? That's a great price!

i've read a few articles on why salt is actually bad for fish if given to them all the time. it should be used to help treat things, but having it with freshwater fish all the time is actually bad for them.

Yes, you get it from the fish section at walmart, or from your LFS. Most of them carry it. Taz posted a picture of the exact stuff i use! ;)

My fish are doing great, actually better than most peoples fish, and I add salt 80% of the time. Its not enough to really be noticable, and the only time i really do add any is when there is a big water change. If you add more when you add water from evaporation, you just increase the concentration as it isn't removed unless you do a water change. I keep it low...only time I really add a bit more is when the fish are actings stressed, adding new fish, or there is some sort of disease. Been adding it to my tanks for over two years now, and since then i haven't had ANY problems with ich, or any other parasites. Keep it at half a table spoon per five gallons. That will keep the concentration low, but still be effective in the tank. If problems like ich or other diseases break out, bump it up to 1.5 tablespoons per five gallons. It really does work wonders.

i wouldn't do it if your fish are doing fine without it

I have a Clown Loach, pbass, bichirs, plecos and Af & Am pikes. add a lil salt ea wc and all are great.

so while you're giving 1 point there's more than enough to say it's ok, just dont OVER DO it.

The OP really wanted to know about BRACKISH conditions anyway. Now that probably wouldnt be good for pikes or any freshwater fish.

Anableps and the sp. 'xingu I' won't really cohabit with each other peacefully for very long. Once the pike starts gettin size and aggression it will REALLY lay the stomp on them. However, how brackish do the anabs have to be? I normally add about 1.5 tablespoons for every five gallons of my aquarium water. Its not brackish, but it does help the colors and vitality of the fish. Not sure if that is enough for the anabs. though. I definately would be cautious using any more than that with the pike as well, as it could prove to be fatal. HTHs

thus is what i do adding salts! but not near enough to be qualified as brackish! it is healthier for the fish!

I bought and added salts today. Will keep yall posted.

if your fish is happy and healthy without salts, i really see no point in adding salt. it would do more harm then good for them.
