Pikehead, Luciocephalus Pulcher - Do you got one?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very cool fish, my store has had them come in from time to time as either 'pike-head crocodile fish' or 'rocket gars' but its been quite a while since we last had them (maybe 2-3 years). The really interesting thing about these guys is that they're labyrinth fish, and closely related to gouramis, although they resemble pikes much more closely. They're an amazing example of convergent evolution. Good luck!

this pikehead hunts with dead accuracy, love the mouth expanding when its feeds,
just provide lots of plants for him to hover in.

I went back to the shop I got them from and picked up the other 2 so now I have 3! they seem to be quite social as they swim around together. They do love lurking in my java fern waiting for guppies. I don't really see them feed - they are too fast for my eyes to keep up!
Hopefully I am getting a new cyborg eye next week so I may be able to watch in slow motion.
I will get the photo's as soon as I can.
I have been looking for Luciocephalus pulcher for well over 2 years - they are on lots of order lists but never come in. So I was well chuffed when i stumbled across them. :D

I am looking forward to the pictures, I have always loved the smaller pike/gar/barracuda looking fish. It is nice to have monsters that fit in a desk/countertop sized tank

I have never seen them but will start watching for them, a few could fit in a 29g tank, mini-monsters!

Guppy whats their common name....not i want like 3 or 4 for my 33 galon

The ones pictured earlier are listed as pike-heads but as Tucc185 pointed out they can be sold as anything the lfs decides to call them.

hey puffer, how about some pics :) ?

I WISH SOMEONE KNEW WHERE I COULD FIND ONE OF THESE BAD BOYS THEY LOOK SO NICE!!!!

I got mine from a maidenhead. I would guess they came from a wholesaler they use. RobD23, PM me and I will tell you the name.
