is there any chance that a geo could be kept in a largish tank with lents or marms? got my eye on some brasiliensis. im open to any other suggestions, but these have caught my eye. tryin to stay away from festaes and the like not that there is anything wrong with them in fact i just about bought one saturday. just dont want to spend major jack on pikes then have a terror beat it senseless or at least give it battle scars. even when rocky won he looked like hell haha.

Given a large enough tank, say 125+, brasilliensis should do fine with lugubris pikes. Anything smaller than that and it starts to get risky for the Geo.

Honestly, if you want to raise show quality fish the only way to go is a one fish only tank. Otherwise there is always the risk of damage even if they are king of the tank.

not looking for show quality fish just dont want shredded fish tank is 300 gallons. by the time i pay shippin on my pikes im lookin at 80-100 per fish and dont want them torn up which is why i am lookin at more docile tankmates thats all thanx for the response btw gorgeous lents scat

I have had G. brasiliensis in with pikes and I was actually surprised how crazy those geos were. They always got beat down..., but they always started the battles. After a while it all calmed down though. If the tank was bigger they would have been alright I think.

You will find out that the brasiliensis is surprisingly aggressive even it does not have the tool to back up its aggression.

They can do some damage. At the end... I had two males. I had to move them into a 75. They battled like crazy, so I put up a divider. I came home to both fish on the same side of the tank and one had no eyes, fins, scales, you get the picture. The fish in the brasiliensis complex are very capable of inflicting damage. Look at their mouths, looks like a central american mouth. I almost wonder if they should be re-classified. They rarley sift through sand, mouth structure looks completely diffferent, and their behavior is not very geophagus like.

My brasil. geo is very aggressive also. I've been keeping a bunch of geo. and 1 pike in a same tank for almost a year, no problem. The pike are also the biggest, maybe that helps.

The only problem with Geos. and Satanoperca is you would have to buy them much larger than the pike. Crenicichla grow FAST, and the Geos. and Satanoperca don't. Simple as that. Until they get to a certain size, they will be in risk of being eaten. Really though, most Geos. and Sata. don't mix well with Lugubris pikes. They would probably be better for Saxatilis pikes...or Crencichla acutirostris...;).

You should SERIOUSLY look into Hoplarchus psittacus man. Seriously recommend them. They aren't overly aggressive, get large, are GORGEOUS, TONS of personality, and can dish it out quite well if needed. The PERFECT cichlid for a pike tank. I have kept my parrots with all of my pikes with no problems...;). My fav. combo was with the lents cuz they would always flare at each other, but were too timid to do much else...haah.
