Belly-crawlers get to about 7". I don't know about their aggression levels, but I'm 100% sure you can keep a bonded pair in a 55g. Take note of the word in bold.
belly crawlers actually get closer to 10". if your gonna do a small aggressive community than stick with some thing in the wallicis. like a couple reganis or a couple compressiceps. than you can add some dwarf cichlids and maybe some barbs or something.

Nice idea, but a breeding pair of Neets would kill a single pike in a 55g.

Not necessarily. Have done it before with an X1 in a 55 for 3 yrs. The Neets don't assume/claim a large territory. Mine only claimed about a third of the tank. You just have to be sure that the pike is the first addition to the tank and has established his space.

Many cichlids have individual aggression levels. Maybe yours were just unusually mellow. My Herichthys carpinte pair annihilated all tankmates in a 3ft tank. Then again, it is possible that my pair were just more aggressive. Still I wouldn't try it.

I agree with all your points, but you never know unless you try. And I have always been one to take a risk.

35 bucks for Cobra OK maybe a little high for some. 10 for a 2.5" neet. Niether are expensive in my opinion.
But we derail and hijack this members thread. So lets agree that we have different philosophies on how we would do our tanks, this is about his.:)

if you dont like the larger tetras and would rather have barbs, im sure there are some that may work. you could always do tiger barbs. if a few get eaten then you know it wont work and you havent spent a fortune finding out. most people pick tetras because they are from the same habitats as the pikes, or other cichlids they keep, so it looks a little more biotopic. if thats not your bag you could do some larger rainbow fish. they are very deep bodied and would probably be fine.
