Pikes in an 85gal hex?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's possible with the dwarf compressicus pike cichlids if you HEAVILY plant the tank and make it hard for them to see eachother all the time

I tried a heavily planted 60 gal with 6 dwarf pikes and the result was 1 dominant pike that patrolled the tank and 5 that hid all day in fear...

Thats the green pike right? I like those little guys too. And im thinking of the user peanut_power. I think she had a bunch of pike. Does she still use this forum? This was like 4-5 years ago though or longer.

She is a he and Peanut is on here once in a while. He still has pikes, he would hurt himself laughing at the thought of not having pikes.

Even though your tank is 85 gal it is only a 30" footprint. That is gonna limit you. I have 3 comps in a 4ft tank heavily planted and lots of cover. There is a female at each end and the male patrols the middle. I usually only see them when they are chasing each other or feeding time. Regani or notos might be a better fit for your tank.

^ What clgkag said. It's not so much about the amount of water in the tank, but the amount of real estate in the tank. Tall tanks like columns and hex tanks do not work well for cichlid communities. A single male C. regani dominated my 55 gallon tank (which is 48" long and 13" wide) even though he was only 4" at the time. He harassed both females to the point that one died and one had to be relocated. I wouldn't try a pair of dwarf pikes in a 30" tank unless they were an actual bonded pair or you had lots and lots of cover. Otherwise you're not looking at many options for pikes in that tank.
