pimafix is it a .....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used pimafix a while back for the first time myself and it made all my fish swim to the top of the water or into the air bubbles like they were having trouble breathing. It also spontaneously killed a rasbora and an upside-down catfish even though I was using less than the recommended dosage.

Makes your water smell pine fresh though!

Just out of curiousity what were your water params like before you treated with the pimafix?

It was a new 20g tank that was cycling. One of the glowlight tetras I moved over to help cycle developed some fungus which was why I was treating.

The ammonia never went above 0.25 ppm due to being moderately planted and using a partially established filter from another tank. No nitrites or nitrates at the time. PH was a bit high around 7.8 and fairly high GH and KH (not sure exactly how hard due to my LFS only carrying crappy dip strips for that), but that's how my water is unfortunately.

Fish were fine in the other tank for months, and fine in the new one for at least 3 days before the pimafix situation.

Pimafix is derived from a natural extract and should be used strictly according to the directions on the bottle.

I dont think its necessarily right, i treated cichlids with it and i always felt the reccomended dose for my 120 gallon tank is ridiculous. Thats 5 caps per 10 gallons x 12. Thats 60 caps! Wth!? I went with it last night and i found my cichlids almost dying and bumping into things while swimming. Almost drunk like. I immediately did a 50% change, allowed some air into my cannister filter which flooded the tank with shreded air bubbles as i gathered the pimafix reduced oxygen considerably. Fish are back to normal now. Ive used mela and pima before maybe 5 caps max which is not even a cap per gallon, worked ok in the past. Id say small amounts over longer periods of time is better. 60 caps for 120 gallons nearly anialated my tank.

Then again, im not sure if my tank is 120 us galllons or uk gallons so its worth looking into before adding.

If that is how much you are dosing, then thats way too much...

Instructions state “Add 5ml per 10 US gallons”

Not 5 Caps per 10 US gallons

P.S this thread is also 10 years old... might be better to start a new thread next time ;)

Your right, i didnt read the sides of the cap just the birds eye view where it says 1ml on the base making me think the whole cap was 1ml. Either way, pretty proud i was able to save them from suffering the wrath of my ignorance!

.

Pimafix and melafix have always resulted in fish death for me, no matter how I used it. I've since then steered clear of it. Use with extreme caution.
