Pink Dempseys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Jack Dempsey you have looks like a gold morph. I have seen them before at a lfs several months before. I haven't seen them since, look albinoish to me. Nice fish though. Since they do not have any color, you cannot tell just from looking at them if male or female. (Regular Female Jack Dempseys have more freckles on gill plate)Best way is to vent( oo male oO female). Once you find out, look for a male/female and wait to see what happens....good luck and please keep us updated.

Thanks for the head up Ceejay. I have only seen these in one place, and that's where I purchased them. He listed them as Pink Dempseys, but he was sayiny they are not true albino's. And...some of them do have some brown, almost plack markings. But, I agree witht he Gold statement. Probably a little more accurate as far as the color goes.

On the Blues, I am having a hard time identifying them as male or female. I have a Pink and a Blue together that seem to be paired off, but I originally thought the Blue was a male. I am starting to think otheriwse now. The faces are both very colorful, so it's throwing me off a bit.

On the Pinks, or Golds they are a dead giveaway. The Males have almost no freckles, but the females get a lof of Blue/green in the gill plate. But...one thing I have noticed about them. Only the dominant female colors up. I had approx 10 of them in a tank, and only 1 with the facial marks of a female. I thought I only had 1 female out of the whole bunch. I needed room, and moved some of the Pinks and started a new tank. In it, within an hour or so I have another female lit up in the face. Now I am thinking I obviously have more.

Was just at a LFS out on the East End of Long Island. Ha a big Male EBJD for $85. He is all banged up though. Not in the sense that his fins are nipped, but he actually has deformities in his face. His eyes were completely sunk into his face too. But...The fish had more personality than any of my Jacks. Came right up to me with zero fear! I wanted to bu him, but I can;t justify it with three tanks and not a significant home for him.

TTT- My fish say thanks for the compliment!

So, I came home last night to find a new batch of eggs. They were laid directly on top of a flower pot. Now, I am not so sure these are gonig to hatch as there are lots of white eggs. But...last spawn had quite a few white ones too. So, I am keeping my fingers crossed. These are from a Male Blue, and Female Pink. The Pink, has zero coloration on her face, and her fins are relatively long which is why I orignally thought this fish was male. Again, not so sure any of these will hatch, but i'm hoping for New Years wigglers!

I'll post pics later tonight.

congrats on the eggs! jacks are so amazing to watch during this process! i keep regular jds and had the same thing happen to me lol.

Thx Sunshine.

Here a bad camera pic of the eggs. As I mentioned, alot of them are white, which supposedly means they are dead, but you never know untill a few days later.Dempsey eggs.jpg

Bad day...Lost my big female today. Or probably a day or so ago actually. Haven't seen her for a couple days and I knew she was going to lay eggs by her colors and her belly. With that, when that happens she will sometimes hang inside the sunken ship for a while. Well a couple days passed and I went in for a better look to find her in the sunken ship belly up. Can't figure out what happened? The male wasn't really abusing her. My water seemed ok. The PH was a little low but not terrible. She was a hearty fish, that spawned a good 5 or 6 times. Maybe just the stress of breeding?

Going to take the male out and put him in a 46 bowfront that I have with 4 other Demseys and see if he finds a mate.
