Anyone heard about this?

"Pink slime" is ammonia-treated beef slurrry added to ground beef. It is found in about 70% of ground beef sold in supermarkets. The best part is that it is not listed in the ingredients. The meat industry claims it is just beef (they call the ammonia a "treatment"), but there is still ammonia left in the product.

We have been getting our pork, beef, and lamb from local farmers for years, but it still makes me wonder about restaurant burgers...

It is ammonium hydroxide. A little bit different, but not by much. One of the other chemicals used to treat meat is sodium hydroxide (lye). Both chemicals kill bacteria that are introduced into the meat. THOSE usually get there as a result of the rendering process -- ie, the gut and fecal material (and all its lovely bacteria) sometimes gets mixed in.

You should also look up "meat glue" on youtube or google...

It was a big thing in Australia a little while ago, basically they got chunks of beef mixed it with some meat glue, wrapped it up and in 24 hours came out looking like a piece of steak again...

Its scary to think what people do to make a few extra bucks here and there...
