Pink-Tail Chalceus with Eartheaters?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You should have no issue keeping chalceus with the species you listed. I have keep both the pink tail (macrolepidotus) and the yellow tail (eryhtrurus) with almost all of the fish you have listed with no issues at all. The eryhtrurus are larger than the macrolepidotus and they tend to be a bit more aggressive towards each other but nothing really bad except for some occasional chasing. As others have noted, a covers is needed to keep these jumpers in their tank. They will fill the top 6" of your tank nicely.

I keep my Chalceus with predatory fishes, like RTC, Gar, Knife Clown, TSN, P. Bass ....he is over 13 cm and doing well. But before this one, I had one with Oscar's, the Oscar's killed him. =/

What size was your tank? I kept mine with oscars in a 270G and didn't have any problems. Pink Tails are lightening fast and should be able to avoid an aggressive O if there is enough space.

I keep a yellow fin with some daemon, he doesn't even seem to notice them.

Also at work there is a large holding tank with a dozen pinktails and a group of mixed eartheaters (altifrons, jurupari, daemon, and lilith) as well as some plecos, festivums, and a young aro. Not only do they do very well together but that also make a very good looking combo.

I've kept them with fish like the ones you describe over the years.

They get big (every bit of 8-10") and can be rough on each other. They also tend to jump out (i found a dried one across the room once).

They're not picky feeders... A group is gorgeous!

Matt
